Preludes & Fugues: Bach and Shostakovich

Music-Makers is pleased to announce a new series taking place at Glasgow’s City Halls from 21st March 2018. This exciting venture combines two extraordinary and related cycles of solo keyboard music into a single series, perhaps for the first time in the UK.

J S Bach’s ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’, a collection of 48 Preludes and Fugues, has inspired and influenced composers across various genres ever since; Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, written some two hundred years later, is one of the pianistic jewels of the twentieth-century.

The two works are closely related as Shostakovich composed his cycle using Bach’s 48 as his model. In a number of instances he uses some of Bach’s motifs, patterns and rhythms in order to create his own original pieces, which also show many of the complexities of modern music.

Gusztáv Fenyő, who gave the first Glasgow performance of the Shostakovich in 2006, plays these two major cycles side-by-side in five concerts – a rich blend of the Baroque and 20th century, shedding fresh light on the music of our own time.
