2010 Festival
VIENNESE MASTERS
For Summer Music 2010 at Paxton House we presented a trio of concerts featuring four works each by three of the greatest masters to have made their home in Vienna:
Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Between them, they wrote some of the seminal works for the developing piano, as well as works combining with it the violin and the 'cello, both of which acquired increasingly important roles in home music-making in the years before and after 1800. Three varied concerts, each of which began with a representative keyboard sonata by Haydn and culminated in a major work from Schubert's final years.
Our audiences enjoyed this opportunity to discover afresh, in the perfectly attuned setting of the Picture Gallery, the richness of this music and the creative genius of three composers, closely associated in time and place who, with Beethoven, stand at the pinnacle of the Classical tradition.
We were delighted to welcome guest artists, Tamás Fejes and Emily Walker, for their first appearances at Paxton.
